Latest News

Saturday 04 September 2004 @ 1500:  Hard to believe it's been a full year since any structures were added to the page, yet we present two new structures for you to download.

Gavin Woolf branches out into structures with his model of a NSW fettler's shed - find this in the Station & Infrastructure  section.

Russell Beer has added another silo to the collection with his release of the GEB medium sized silo and grain shed in the "Other Structures" section.

Tuesday 02 September 2003 @ 2000:  Following on from the signs outside the pubs, Russell Beer's now visited these buildings armed with camera and measuring tape and produced his first volume of Central Victorian buildings - these sensational models are now available from the the "Other Structures" section.

Sunday 24 Aug 2003 @ 2330:  I've added a link to James Brook's new model, "buffer stops and baulks".   You'll find it in the Station & Infrastructure  section.

Sunday 10 Aug 2003 @ 1000:  A new "structure" is available alerting your virtual population to the ready availability of the amber refreshment - an animated "Victoria Bitter" or "CUB" Sign by Russell Beer.  Find it in the "Other Structures" section.

Monday 28 July 2003 @ 1930:  This tree fern of mine has been floating around on my PC for 18 months or more while other models took precedence.  A couple of hours for a photoshoot and creation of an installer and my tree fern is ready to see the light of day.  Find it below in the Vegetation section.

Tuesday 15 July 2003 @ 0500: As I continue to work through the backlog of models in my inbox, Russell Beer's awesome Ultima Grain Sub-Terminal has now been prepared for download.  This massive structure will dwarf your trains and has been cleverly constructed in modular form for ease of assembly.  Another outstanding model from Russell.  Find it below in the Structures section.

Wednesday 9 July 2003 @ 2300: E P Norrell is a new name to these pages, but his three New South Wales grain silos will immediately be a popular addition for many Australian add-on routes.  You'll find these NSW grain silos in the structures section below.

Wednesday 9 July 2003 @ 0130:  Michael Thompson's produced a magnificent model of yet another NSW standard station - this time it's the PC2 country station.  Find it in the Station Structures below.

From the West Coast of the USA comes Dave Nelson's "California Dry Grass Texture"  - I've asked Dave if we can host this texture here as it's such an appropriate texture for summer in inland Australia. Find it in Vegetation below.

Sunday 25 May 2003 @ 2145:  Paul Gausden's continuing to exert his modeling energy on Australian wildlife - this time I'm proud to release his series of Australian birds - cockatoo, galah and crow:  these are available in both static and animated (flying) versions.  Read the readme file carefully after installation.  The birds are ready for you to set free after downloading them from the  "Livestock" section.

Peter Newell, designer of the awesome "Coal to Necastle" route, has created some NSWGR speed limit signs and mileposts.  These are ready for download in the Structures section below.

Monday 19 May 2003 @ 0555:  I've completed a model of the palm tree outside my home and posted it in the Vegetation section below.

Saturday 17 May 2003 @ 0020:  This release'll blow your socks off!  Ex-pat Aussie Paul Gausden has now animated his kangaroos and let them loose on the tracks.  A blast from your whistle will scatter them:  yes, a working kangaroo hazard.  Absolutely brilliant work by Paul.  Ready for you to download.  I've written full instructions for incorporating these creatures into your route.  Ready for download in the (very) Livestock section.

Friday 09 May 2003 @ 0200:  Paul Gausden has now added emus to his passing parade of livestock.  Ready for you to download in the  "Livestock" section.

Tuesday 6 May 2003 @ 0000:  As promised, we're wheeling out yet more trees that we've been growing out the back - this time Michael Thompson has produced a series of seven different eucalypts as well as a wall of gum trees.  See them in the "Vege" patch below.

Saturday 03 May 2003 @ 0600:  Well, when you plant trees, the animals start to appear!  The kangaroos have moved into the nursery, attracted by the gum and wattle trees.  Paul Gausden, author of the standard-setting 3DC loco tutorial and Shape File Manager, has rounded them up, creating models that will enable you to set up your own mob - you'll find them corralled at the newly established "Livestock" section.

Friday 02 May 2003 @ 0700:  Russell Beer does it again with a simply splendid model of Gordon railway station.   Download below.

Friday 25 Apr 2003 @ 0100:  The nursery at Steam4me is now open!  - now you can start planting indigenous trees!    James Hart has produced four fine examples of Australian Eucalypts while Christopher Sos has produced his first model in MSTS, a golden wattle.   See the new category, Vegetation, below.

INTRODUCTION

While working on a route I started to find some "issues" with existing shapes for route development:
  1. a lack of constant nomenclature meant that something like "factory3" (for example) could be anything from a small country warehouse to a large industrial complex;

  2.
  3. the .ACE files didn't necessarily have the same or even vaguely similar names to the .S and .SD files (eg "ukcrossgate.s" looks for "levelcrossing.ace") .  After a couple of weeks, it became impossible to remember the filenames, necessitating running the .S file through SFM to uncompress it, then looking within the .S file at the names of the ACE files required for that model shape  - most unsatisfactory;

  4.
  5. no consistency on where to find the data required for adding the item to a .REF file; and

  6.
  7. no consistency of including, naming or placing readme.txt files, so an UNZIP could over-write a previous readme.txt which had been placed anywhere from \Microsoft Games\ to \Routes\MyRoute.
I therefore developed a standard which I'm using on all structures and infrastructure items at this site.  I will still be using an installer, but the end-user will still need to move shape and texture files as well add the model's details to the .REF file, but this procedure will be made as consistent and simple as possible.

Every model on this page will open into a folder within the "Routes" folder of MSTS.  This folder will be known as "AU_AddOns" and each model will install into its own folder underneath.  Each model's .S, .SD, .ACE, readme, add_to_ref files will be consistently and clearly named so that you can identify all the components of the model;  all WILL begin with AU_, something I introduced when this overall web site was initiated.  See the image below for an example.

The "readme.txt" and the "add_to_ref.txt" will remain in the folder, shapes and textures will be in their own folders.  This means if you need to re-install a model, or you wish to acknowledge the copyright owner in the route you will be distributing, you will have no trouble in finding this information.

The readme.txt file will contain a folder map of what files go where as well as the classification and the name you will find it under when you click on Placement | More in RE (which brings up the "Object Selector" pane shown below).

I hope that this will assist the route builders in keeping track of their Australian model add-ons.

DOWNLOAD INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Click on the Image beside the name of the model you are interested in;

  2.
  3. the page that opens gives you a picture, a brief description and a link to download an .EXE file:  download the .EXE file to a folder of your choice, perhaps "My Downloads".  Then browse to the folder with Windows Explorer and double-click on the file to commence its installation.  Click on "Next" or "Ok" to commence the installation and read the readme.txt printed on the screen;

  4.  you will then need to copy the shapes to the route's Shapes folder and the textures to the Texture folder.  The add_to_ref file contains the fragment of code that needs to be added to the route's .REF file.  Thereafter it's a simple matter to find the model in the Placement | More section of Route Editor.
